Rays Clinch First. Junior Caminero Made Sure of It.
One out in the bottom of the ninth. Jonathan Aranda already in scoring position after a double off the right-field wall. Then Junior Caminero turned on a 97-mph first-pitch fastball from Bryan Abreu and sent it 417 feet to left-center — a walk-off, and the first playoff berth clinched by anybody in baseball this year.
Tampa Bay beat Houston 3-1 at Tropicana Field on Friday night, and the game ended the way only baseball can end a pennant race: on one swing. Caminero's blast was his first career walk-off home run and his 40th of the season — making him, at 23, one of only two active players (alongside Aaron Judge) with back-to-back 40-homer years. The Rays improve to 88-59, the best record in the American League, and return to the postseason for the first time since 2023.
First to the Finish Line
Every team in baseball is chasing October. On September 11, the Rays got there first. It's a distinction that means something specific in a 162-game season: while 29 other clubs were still doing math on magic numbers, Tampa Bay's front office — the one that has never had a payroll to match the Yankees or Red Sox — built a roster that clinched before Labor Day weekend was even over. The Rays hold a three-game lead over New York in the AL East, with a division title (and the bye that comes with it) still very much in reach.
