The Rally Monkey. Down to their last strike in Game 6 — twice. And then Game 7. The 2002 Angels won the only championship in franchise history in about the most dramatic way possible, and the whole series culminated in one final game that belongs in the record books.
Angels — 2002 World Series · Game 7
After coming back from being one strike away from elimination in Game 6, the Angels played a straightforward Game 7 — and won it cleanly. Scott Spiezio's three-run home run in the eighth inning of Game 6 is what everyone remembers, but it's Game 7 where the championship was actually secured. Darin Erstad, Troy Glaus, and the rest of the Halos lineup put it away against Barry Bonds, Jeff Kent, and a Giants team that had come so close. The whole game on a single scorecard.

The Rally Monkey and a World Series for the ages
The 2002 World Series between the Angels and the Giants is one of the most remembered in the past 30 years — largely because of Game 6. The Giants led the series 3–2 and were six outs away from a championship when the Angels began their comeback. Twice, the Angels were down to their last strike. Scott Spiezio hit a three-run home run to tie it. Darin Erstad hit a solo shot to take the lead. The Giants couldn't hold it. The Angels won 6–5. The Rally Monkey — a then-new tradition at Edison Field — became a part of baseball folklore that night.
Game 7 was, by comparison, anticlimactic — but "anticlimactic" means the Angels led from start to finish and held on to win their first-ever World Series title. For a franchise that had been the California Angels, the Anaheim Angels, and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, it was the moment everything finally came together.
Glaus, Erstad, Percival — a team without a superstar who won anyway
The 2002 Angels were the archetype of a championship team with no transcendent star — they won through depth, lineup construction, and a bullpen that shut down everything late. Troy Glaus was the World Series MVP. Tim Salmon was a fan favorite. Francisco Rodriguez (K-Rod) was a 20-year-old rookie who became the best reliever in the postseason. This was a team in every sense of the word, and that made the championship feel earned.
Any Angels game, any year
The 2002 Game 7 is the most-requested Angels game, but Field & Ink can rebuild any MLB game from the last 100 years — a Nolan Ryan no-hitter, a Vlad Guerrero moment, a Trout at-bat. Use the Game Finder →
