2001 World Series Game 7 hand-lettered scorecard — Diamondbacks vs Yankees, Luis Gonzalez walk-off

Diamondbacks — 2001 World Series · Game 7

The Diamondbacks trailed 2–1 going into the bottom of the ninth with Mariano Rivera — the best closer in baseball, coming off a save in Game 6 — on the mound. Tony Womack tied it. Rivera hit Craig Counsell to load the bases. Luis Gonzalez stepped up and hit a walk-off single over a drawn-in infield. A franchise four years old had beaten the Yankees, in their backyard, in Game 7. The whole game — every at-bat, every out, the comeback inning-by-inning — on one scorecard.

The greatest World Series of the modern era

The 2001 World Series was played weeks after September 11, in a country that needed baseball. The Yankees won Games 3, 4, and 5 in New York — including two back-to-back walk-off wins in extra innings. Arizona won Games 6 and 7 at Bank One Ballpark. The series had everything: Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson rotating starts, Derek Jeter's walk-off homer in Game 4, Roger Clemens and Mike Mussina for New York. Six of the seven games were decided in the final at-bat.

When it ended — with Gonzalez's single dropping in front of Derek Jeter in the ninth — it had been the most dramatic World Series in memory. The scorecard from Game 7 captures what that night was: who was on base, what inning it turned, how Rivera came in and how the D-backs answered.

Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling — the greatest rotation duo

The D-backs built their championship around two aces who had no business pitching in the same rotation: Randy Johnson, who had won four straight Cy Young Awards, and Curt Schilling, who was having the best season of his career. Johnson won Co-MVP with Schilling after starting Games 2, 6, and 7 — including relief work in Game 7. That combination of aces is a once-in-a-generation event in baseball.
