Jake McCarthy Just Had a Night Only Shohei Ohtani Has Had

4-for-5. Two home runs. Three RBI. Four runs scored. Two stolen bases. On Saturday night in St. Louis, the Rockies outfielder became just the second player in the modern era to fill a box score like that in one game — joining Ohtani, and no one else.

Jake McCarthy led off Saturday's game at Busch Stadium by hitting the first pitch he saw from Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore into the seats. He wasn't done. Before the night was over he'd added a two-run homer off reliever Luis Gastelum in the sixth, stolen two bases, scored four runs, and driven in three, going 4-for-5 as the Rockies beat the Cardinals 8-6.

Box scores like that don't happen. By the account of the game's own box score, McCarthy is only the second player in the modern era to record at least four runs, four hits, three RBI, two home runs and two stolen bases in a single game. The only other player to do it: Shohei Ohtani, against the Marlins on September 19, 2024.

A Bright Night in a Hard Season

The Rockies came into Saturday at 45-71, a long way from contention. That's exactly what makes a night like this one worth keeping. Seasons like Colorado's 2026 don't produce many nights fans want to remember — but this was one of them, and it belongs to McCarthy and to every Rockies fan who was watching. The win moved Colorado to 46-71; St. Louis fell to 58-59.
