The Cleveland Indians led 2–1 going into the 9th inning of Game 7. Closer José Mesa recorded two outs and then blew the save — Moisés Alou, Charles Johnson, and Craig Counsell tied it up. The game went to the 11th. Edgar Renteria, the 21-year-old Colombian shortstop, singled through the drawn-in infield to score Counsell and win the World Series. One of the most dramatic Game 7 endings in baseball history.

Wild-card champions in year five
The Florida Marlins entered the 1997 season having existed for just four years. Owner Wayne Huizenga went all-in, spending heavily on free agents — Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla, Moisés Alou, Liván Hernández — and they worked. The Marlins made the playoffs as a wild card and then kept winning: the Giants, the Braves, and finally the Indians. When Renteria singled in the 11th, a team that had never been to the postseason had a World Series title.
The 9th inning comeback
What makes the 1997 Game 7 legendary is the way the Marlins won it. They were losing with two outs in the 9th inning, one strike away from elimination, when José Mesa — arguably the most reliable closer in the AL that year — started walking batters and hitters started getting on base. The comeback itself is stunning; the extra innings that followed were almost anticlimactic. Almost.
